A member of the UNICOM project Consortium – Sumy National Agrarian University (Ukraine), together with Royal Agrarian University (UK), University of Cambridge (UK) and ETH Zurich (Switzerland) with the financial support of XTX Markets (UK) is implementing the project “Training of experts to assess the condition of soils damaged as a result of hostilities”. The development of the project and fundraising for its implementation was initiated by the community of Sumy region and is an example of effective interaction between the University and the Community.
Currently, the selection of candidates for training has been announced.

DATES: November 13 – December 13, 2023.

TARGET GROUP: former military personnel with education/experience in agriculture, environmental protection, cartography (20-24 people).

TRAINING SCHEDULE

1 week – online training.

Week 2 – Sumy National Agrarian University.

3.4 weeks – remote consultations, preparation of the report.

December 11-13 – defence of the report at Sumy National Agrarian University (possibly online).

LANGUAGE: English (translation will be provided), Ukrainian.

UPON COMPLETION OF THE PROGRAM, THE SPECIALISTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  • take samples of soils damaged as a result of hostilities;
  • analyse soil samples for contaminants using modern equipment (PxRF);
  • to record the environmental consequences of hostilities using GIS technologies and remote sensing tools;
  • conduct research on the consequences of hostilities using aerial photographs. Processing of aerial photographs using QGIS software;
  • use data from ground-based hyperspectrometric measurements to assess the condition of the soil;
  • calculate the damage caused to agricultural land as a result of hostilities.

All expenses (accommodation, travel, meals, training) are covered by the program organizers.
