A modern University is not only the center of scientific research and specialists training; over time, more and more attention is paid to its role in solving social problems and stimulating economic development. This trend, known as the third mission of Universities, complements the traditional functions of teaching and research.
On October 23, 2024, a webinar dedicated to this important issue has been held as part of the sixteenth international exhibition “Innovation in modern education”. The participants of the event had an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the experience of European Universities in the implementation of the third mission, in particular, the Latvian and the Lund Universities.
One of the key elements of the discussion was the Erasmus+ project “Universities-Communities: Strengthening Cooperation”. This project is aimed at strengthening ties between Universities and local communities, stimulating joint initiatives and developing innovative solutions for current social problems. The participants of the webinar got acquainted with the experience of implementing the project in detail and discussed its impact on the development of Universities and communities.
The scientists of the University of Latvia presented specific examples of the projects that demonstrate how the University, being one of the leaders in the implementation of the third mission among Baltic Universities, cooperates with business and public organizations.
In particular, it was about the development of innovative technologies to solve health and environmental problems, creation of startups and technology parks, as well as organization of educational programs for adults.
The projects implemented at the Lund University, one of the oldest and most prestigious Universities in Sweden, became an example of a successful implementation of the third mission. The webinar participants learned about the innovative infrastructure of the University, which promotes the development of scientific research and commercialization of technologies, the support system for startups and small businesses, as well as partnerships with industrial enterprises and state bodies.
According to the results of the webinar, it became clear that the third mission of Universities has a significant potential for solving current social problems. The experience of the Latvian and the Lund Universities shows that Universities can play an important role in solving social problems, stimulating economic growth and improving the quality of life of citizens.
For successful implementation of the third mission, Ukrainian Universities need to strengthen cooperation with business, public organizations and the authorities, develop innovative infrastructure, attract additional funding for research and development, as well as improve the qualifications of teachers and scientists.
The third mission of Universities is not just trendy, but it is the necessity dictated by the challenges of the modern world. Ukrainian Universities have every opportunity to become active participants in this process and contribute to the country’s development.
